If you are a speech pathologist, singing teacher, or vocal health professional committed to creating inclusive and affirming care for all clients, understanding the principles of gender-affirming voice work is essential. “Unpacking the Binary: Gender Affirming Voice Basics” equips clinicians with the knowledge and skills to support trans, non-binary, and queer clients in achieving their vocal goals while fostering authenticity and vocal sustainability.
This course explores tools for assessing and tracking client outcomes, techniques for developing voice goals beyond traditional gender binaries, and strategies for addressing pitch, resonance, and other variables critical to voice perception. We recognize that some clients may desire their voice to align with a specific gender identity, while others may have different goals for their vocal perception and production—this course celebrates and supports all paths. These principles not only enhance care for gender-diverse clients but also have broader implications, empowering all voice clinicians to approach their work with greater empathy, precision, and clinical effectiveness.
In this one-hour introductory-level course, participants will deepen their clinical understanding and enhance their ability to apply the principles of gender-affirming voice work, focusing on assessment, individualized treatment planning, and therapuetic tools to support authentic and sustainable vocal development.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Develop individualized voice goals for clients that honor their unique identities and experiences, including those existing within and outside traditional gender binaries.
Apply principles of pitch training in conjunction with resonance, intonation, and articulation to create a cohesive and authentic voice that aligns with client goals.
Implement evidence-based strategies to facilitate generalization of new vocal skills into everyday communication contexts, ensuring functional and sustainable outcomes.
